Motorcycle Helmet Bluetooth Battle: Sena vs. Cardo

In the world of motorcycle communication, there has been a Hatfield and McCoy-esque feud brewing between brands. Okay, maybe not that bad. The Harley-Davidson versus Indian rivalry might be a little more apt for this article.

However, when it comes to rider-to-rider communication, there are two main names in the motorcycle helmet Bluetooth game: Sena and Cardo.

The Sena 50S and Cardo Packtalk Bold both bring something to the table, and choosing the right one can enhance your ride. Everything from size, ease of use, speaker and microphone quality, charge times, range, mesh, and ability to survive all weather conditions play a vital part in the decision.

So where do we start?

The Catch 22: Helmet Comfort vs. Ease of Use

Sena and Cardo have each developed Bluetooth for motorcycle helmets that can easily be brand-identified. Cardo stays true to form with its smaller size. The Cardo-sized command station allows helmets to be fitted better in almost any location. The larger Sena can be problematic to install on some helmets due to size.

But the tides are quickly turned when it comes to button-pushing. When first becoming acquainted with the Cardo, it can feel like typing with oven mitts on. The Sena out-of-the-box is easy to use as its large button and dial work with even the largest winter gloves. Thankfully, this is a moot point with the advancement of voice commands.

A simple “Hey Cardo” or “Hey Sena” can initiate a command. Sena takes it a step further and allows you to use voice commands such as “Hey Siri” and “Hey Google” to answer those random questions your head encounters when riding.

Sounding Off: Speakers vs. Speech

Cardo teamed up with JBL speakers to provide the best sound for their motorcycle helmet talk device. The 40mm speakers and sound processor deliver amazing quality and superb sound. Cardo’s automatic volume keeps your sound level parallel with the ambient noise outside.

The Sena high-definition speakers boost bass and audio levels but are not the same quality as the JBL units. Sena’s advanced noise control only cancels out ambient noise during conversations.

The microphone makes up for speech intelligibility where the Sena speakers lack in sound quality. The microphone provides a crisp and clear transmission from commands to rider-to-rider conversations and phone calls in HD mode.

Speed of Electricity: Charge Times Compared

Sena and Cardo both offer a talking time of 13-14 hours before needing a recharge. The Cardo has a charging time of approximately four hours, which can be a buzzkill at the last minute.

Sena boasts a charge time of only one hour. In the time it takes you to gear up and check tire pressures, you could have roughly six hours of Bluetooth intercom!

Going the Distance — with Friends (but how many can you include?)

Similar to the days when motorcycle manufacturers gave “actual” weights to bikes, Sena and Cardo have a battle of the distance. Sena claims 1.2 miles when paired with another rider, while Cardo claims one mile between two riders. When linked up with at least six riders, that distance will increase to a maximum of 5 miles between lead and backmarker for both brands.

Sena wins the popularity contest for those with an abundance of friends or who participate in large group rides. Sena can provide up to 24 people with communication in a group mesh, and the open mesh can hold virtually an infinite number of riders within a five-mile radius. The Cardo can only handle up to 15 riders in total.

Weathering the Storm (without shorting out)

“Is the [insert brand preference here] waterproof?” is easily one of the most frequently asked Google searches by motorcycle enthusiasts when seeking out their communication needs. Rightfully so, as we motorcyclists tend to end up in the occasional downpour.

Cardo backs their Bluetooth for your motorcycle helmet with a waterproof warranty. Sena threads the line and says, “Highly weather and water-resistant,” meaning that warranty claims with Sena for your monsoon-soaked device might not be covered.

Conclusion: Which Motorcycle Helmet Bluetooth is the Best?

Well, until Sena and Cardo merge to create “Senardo,” you’ll have to choose which best fits your riding style, existing gear, and needs. So the real question is, “Which Bluetooth for a motorcycle helmet is better for you?”

If you’re looking for the best sound, easy fitment, and a complete warranty against water damage, the Cardo PackTalk Bold is a solid choice for you and your 14 friends.

However, if you’re negligent about charging but enjoy large group rides, precision microphone pick-up, and futuristic aesthetics, then the Sena 50S motorcycle helmet Bluetooth is your perfect fit.
