San Antonio Motorcycle Hangouts and events

San Antonio has a vibrant motorcycle scene and central Texas is the home of many events, shops, and shows.

Let’s start with food. You can’t leave Texas without eating exceptional Tex-Mex cuisine, and Mi Tierra Cafe y Panaderia is the place to go. With a vibrant atmosphere and incredible food, you won’t be disappointed. Seriously. Go there.

Make sure you park your bike and spend time partying along the San Antonio Riverwalk in the evenings. With tons of restaurants and bars along the water, the drinks and music are flowing freely.

If you want live music, take a ride out to the 4way Bar and Grill in Lakehills, Texas. With incredible burgers, cold beer, and a lively atmosphere, you’ll be able to enjoy this friendly atmosphere and biker bar. And if you’re up for the challenge, order Big Mike’s Four Way Challenge: 4 patties, 4 cheese, 4 bacon, and fries. For $20. Finish it within 20 minutes and get a $25 gift card and your picture on the wall.

If you need gear, a bike to rent to ride the Hill Country, or a place to stop and stretch your legs, visit Destination Cycle in Kerrville, Texas. They also have an extended test ride program where you can try all of the latest models before you ride one home.

You want history? Check out The Alamo. This was a historic mission and location of the first battle after Texas declared independence from Mexico. Quick summary: Texas lost the Alamo but then won their independence during the Battle of San Jacinto four weeks later.

There are a few incredible motorcycle events in the Hill Country. First is the Harvest Classic, which is a vintage motorcycle rally in Lukenbach, Texas. You might only know of this town from Waylon Jenning’s classic by the same name, but Lukenbach is home to plenty of live music events.

Also, try to make San Antonio’s Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride. Although this is a global ride to support men’s health, San Antonio's route and turnout is exceptional.

Finally, be sure to look into the Mezcal Moto Rally. Although this ride begins in Austin, the participants travel through San Antonio on their way to Oaxaca where they sample mezcal in the heart of Mexico. It’s a great time with a small group of riders.

San Antonio Weather & Riding

Let me make one recommendation - don’t underestimate the summer heat in Texas. The best riding is in fall or spring when the temperature is in the 70s. There’s not much rain in Alamo City, so you probably don’t need to bring your rain gear. But pack a tent if you’re going to Big Bend. The camping is incredible.

Make sure that before you ride in San Antonio, you make sure you have proper motorcycle gear for extreme weather.

San Antonio Motorcycle Rules & Tips

Texans love their independence, and the state (or Republic for you Texas) doesn’t require much gear when riding. If you choose to ride without a helmet, that’s fine as long as you’re at least 21 years old, and either have $10K in medical insurance, or have completed an approved Motorcycle Operator Training Course. No other gear is required by law.

Lane splitting isn’t technically legal, but it’s not illegal either. There aren’t any laws that prohibit lane splitting, but there aren’t laws that allow it. So if you choose to split, you’re doing it with some risk.

Preparing for your San Antonio ride

When planning your San Antonio ride, make sure you consider the weather and temperature. Pack some layers for riding in the winter months (just in case), and lighter gear for summer riding.

When packing, make sure you read our article on traveling with gear. If you don’t have gear, that isn’t an issue. Many Twisted Road motorcycle owners have helmets and other gear they provide to riders. Just let us know and we can help you coordinate this.

We are happy to help you find the bike you’re looking for so you can enjoy Texas on two wheels. So bring your moto-gear, cowboy boots, and appetite. San Antonio is waiting for you.
