Texas Motorcycle Laws: What You Need to Know Before Renting a Bike

Texas is huge—the second largest state in America behind Alaska—and offers endless riding opportunities, especially for those who seek a warmer climate and desolation.

These reasons and more make the Lone Star State one of the top locations for motorcycle rentals on Twisted Road, especially in the Austin, Houston, and Dallas areas.

We’ve helped thousands of riders find the perfect bike for Texas roads—whether it’s a Harley Street Glide for a Lone Star road trip, an ADV bike like the BMW GS to head to  Big Bend, or a sportbike like the Ducati Supersport to carve up the best twisties in the state.

But before you hit the road, knowing Texas motorcycle laws is essential to keep your ride safe and legal. From licensing requirements to helmet regulations and insurance policies, we’ve broken it all down so you can focus on what matters—riding.

Here’s everything you need to know about the law before renting motorcycles in Texas.

Texas Motorcycle License Requirements

In Texas, you must have a valid motorcycle license or endorsement to operate a motorcycle. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Motorcycle Endorsement (Class M License): If you already have a Texas driver’s license, you can add a Class M endorsement by completing a motorcycle safety course approved by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR).

  • Out-of-State Riders: If you’re visiting Texas and already have a motorcycle license from another state, you’re legally allowed to rent and ride a motorcycle. However, always carry your license with you.

  • International Riders: If you’re from another country, Texas generally recognizes international motorcycle licenses. It’s recommended that you also carry an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your original license, especially for those not written in English or Spanish.

For official licensing information, visit the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Texas Helmet Laws: Do You Need One?

Texas has a partial helmet law, meaning some riders are exempt while others must wear a helmet.

  • Riders Under 21: Anyone under the age of 21 must wear a DOT-approved helmet.

  • Riders 21 and Older: You can ride without a helmet if you have either:

    • Completed a motorcycle safety course approved by TDLR or

    • Have health insurance coverage that meets the state's minimum requirements.

While helmets aren’t required for experienced riders with insurance, wearing one is always recommended for safety.

For full details, check the Texas Transportation Code, Section 661.003.

Motorcycle Insurance Requirements

Texas requires all motorcyclists to carry liability insurance at a minimum. The state’s minimum insurance coverage is:

  • $30,000 per person for bodily injury

  • $60,000 per accident for bodily injury

  • $25,000 for property damage

If you're renting a motorcycle, make sure to review the terms to ensure you’re fully protected.

Texas Motorcycle Equipment Requirements

Before renting a bike, ensure it meets Texas’s legal equipment requirements. A motorcycle must have:

  • At least one but no more than two headlamps

  • A rearview mirror on at least one side

  • Functional turn signals (for bikes manufactured after 1960)

  • Working brakes (both front and rear)

  • A horn

  • A license plate light

Rental companies typically provide bikes that meet all legal requirements, but it’s always a good idea to double-check.

Lane Splitting and Traffic Laws

Texas does not allow lane splitting (riding between lanes of traffic). Motorcyclists must follow the same traffic laws as other vehicles, including:

  • Obeying speed limits and traffic signals

  • Using turn signals when changing lanes or making a turn

  • Not riding on sidewalks or in bicycle lanes

Failure to follow these laws can result in fines or penalties, so ride responsibly!

Essential Tips for Renting a Motorcycle in Texas

Renting a motorcycle in Texas opens up a world of incredible riding, from the twisty backroads of Hill Country to the long, open highways stretching toward the Gulf. But before you throw a leg over your rental and hit the throttle, a little preparation goes a long way in ensuring a smooth, safe, and enjoyable ride.

Here are a few final tips to keep in mind before heading out on your Texas motorcycle adventure:

  • Check the weather. Texas weather can be unpredictable, with sudden rain showers or scorching heat. Pack accordingly and check the forecast before your ride.

  • Wear protective gear. Even in areas where helmets aren’t legally required, full protective gear—including gloves, boots, and a riding jacket—can make all the difference.

  • Inspect the bike before renting. Give your rental a thorough once-over. Check the brakes, lights, and tire condition before you ride off to ensure everything is in top shape.

  • Know your route. Texas is massive, and rural roads can be remote. Plan your ride in advance, keep an eye on fuel stops, and be aware of road conditions.

  • Be mindful of wildlife and road debris. Texas roads, especially in rural areas, often have wildlife crossings. Stay alert for deer, wild hogs, and loose gravel, particularly at dawn and dusk. And watch those animal skulls that pop up here and there!

Ride Texas the Right Way

Texas offers some of the best riding in the country, from the sweeping curves of Hill Country to the vast stretches of open highway leading into the desert.

But before you fire up your rental, knowing the state’s motorcycle laws and safety tips will keep your ride smooth and hassle-free.

At Twisted Road, we make it easy to rent the perfect bike for your Texas adventure.
