How Does Twisted Road’s Motorcycle Rental Insurance Work?

Learn how we protect all owners and riders with our comprehensive $1,000,000 protection plans – unmatched within the motorcycle-sharing industry.

Twisted Road's motorcycle protection plan is the most comprehensive option for motorcycle damage and liability coverage in the motorcycle rental market today.

We encourage all riders to compare programs before they rent a motorcycle to understand the coverage limits and differences between policies.

There is a four-word question that everyone asks me when I explain our company. I usually say something like, “We allow motorcycle riders to rent each other’s personal motorcycles.”

The response is almost always, “But how does motorcycle insurance work?”

It’s funny how our brains work. People don’t ask, “Do riders like what you’re doing?” (absolutely—here's what our riders have to say) or “Do people actually put their bikes on your site?” (Yes. by the thousands). Instead they focus on insurance. But that question isn’t really about motorcycle insurance, is it? What everyone is really asking is, “Can I trust you?” The answer is yes, and here’s why.

Actually, before I begin educating you on the nuances of insurance and protection plans -- and I know you’re all excited to become the neighborhood expert on motorcycle rental insurance -- let me provide information on our damage frequency. Less than 1% of all rentals report any damage.

So, this overview provides a precaution for an infrequent situation but one that does happen. Our thorough (and proprietary) rider screening process filters out higher-risk motorcycle riders way before the owner receives the request to rent out their baby.

In this article, there are four basic motorcycle rental insurance questions we’re going to answer:

  1. Do I need to own my own motorcycle to rent one on Twisted Road?
  2. How does your motorcycle rental damage insurance work?
  3. Do you cover the rider and owner with liability protection?
  4. Do you offer different motorcycle rental insurance plans for riders?

Let’s get started.

Motorcycle Rental Insurance Overview: Motorcycle Protection Plans for Damage and Liability Insurance

Do I need to own my own motorcycle to rent a motorcycle on Twisted Road?

No. When we started the company in 2017, this was a requirement of ours. All riders needed to own their own registered and insured motorcycle before they could rent. However, in 2019, we changed this policy, and now anyone with a motorcycle endorsement/license is eligible to rent with Twisted Road.

How does Twisted Road’s motorcycle rental damage protection plan work?

Owner protection:

If a rider does any damage to a motorcycle during the rental, our protection plan covers the repair or replacement costs of the damages. Our motorcycle damage coverage is up to $40,000, or the value of the motorcycle, whichever comes first. For example, if a rider totals a motorcycle valued at $4,500, the insurance covers the motorcycle for $4,500, not $40,000.

Rider protection:

In addition, we offer insurance to all riders at checkout. This short-term policy protects the rider from owing a lot of money if they horizontally park. A little scratch on the tank? Yeah. Kickstand not all the way down and the bike falls over? Absolutely.

All riders are responsible for paying the insurance deductible, and the maximum "out-of-pocket costs" for a rider will range from $1,500 to $3,000, depending on the protection plan policy they select.

How much liability protection do you offer the rider and owner?

Owner protection:

We cover all owners for up to $1,000,000 of liability protection. For free. Always.

Rider protection:

All riders are also covered by our policies for third-party personal and property liability. Here’s what this means in plain English. You rent a motorcycle, hit a patch of gravel, and go into a low-side slide into a Porsche, which goes into the guardrail. Damages to this other auto (in this case, the Porsche) is known as “third-party property damage” and is covered by Twisted Road.

How much coverage do we provide? Riders are covered by the minimum required amount, which varies by state.

Do you offer different plans for riders?

We offer three different rider protection packages with varying levels of coverage. Our Minimum Coverage Policy is a high-deductible plan with limited coverage. We also offer a Premium Plan with high coverage and a low deductible. And of course, the Standard Plan falls between these two. Deductibles range from $1,000 to $2,500, depending on the selected policy.

FAQs

What does Twisted Road’s insurance cover?
Twisted Road protection plans cover third-party liability and financial responsibility for physical damage to the rented motorcycle during your trip. Coverage levels vary by plan, with higher tiers reducing your deductible and out-of-pocket exposure.

What are deductible limits on Twisted Road plans?
Deductibles vary by protection tier. Higher coverage plans typically result in lower deductibles for renters. Always review the specific deductible amounts shown at checkout before selecting a plan.

Is roadside assistance included?
Roadside assistance may be available as an add-on, but it’s not automatically included in all protection tiers. Confirm this during checkout.

Can international riders use Twisted Road insurance?
Yes. International riders can access damage and liability coverage if they can demonstrate legal motorcycle riding privileges in their home country.
