I was at The One Moto Show in Portland when I first met Guinevere Simpson. She was unassuming in her wool beanie as she approached our Twisted Road booth. Soft-spoken and reserved, she leaned in to introduce herself and learn more about our company. She was different from most people. Curious. Questioning. An artist.
I asked her more about what she does. Who she is. And as I learned more about her and her passion, I realized that I was in the presence of someone who would be setting new standards for motorcycle seats.
Guin is a seamstress, who grew up learning how to sew from her mother and grandma. "From quilts to dresses to play clothes, I started working with leather making bags, utility belts, holsters and other purpose-driven items and sold them at local craft fairs and events," Guin explained.
She began taking classes at a fashion design school and local fabric and sewing machine shops.
Soon, she fell in love. With motorcycles.
10 years ago, she took an MSF course, got hooked, and bought a bike the following week. She now rides a Suzuki Boulevard S50, and found a passion in making custom moto-seats. This is where she shines.
Guin started her own company, Black Stitch Label, to follow this dream, but works at a parachute company to pay the bills and gain experience.
She learned her most important lesson that "every stitch counts" and she enjoys knowing that her sewing will literally save someone's life. She plans to build her own parachute one day to use while skydiving.
She can turn around a custom moto-seat in just under a week including the stitch design and pattern work. But at the end of the day, she just loves sewing.
Her dream? To reupholster a classic car interior. Her El Camino is exactly the type of car she finds inspiring.
Go to her website here, her personal instagram here, or her company instagram here.
That's all we've got this time around.
Happy riding! Thanks.
