Jay S. of CA tells Twisted Road about his favorite road, routes and rides on motorcycles and bicycles.
Tell us about your riding experience. How long have you been riding, and how many bikes have you owned? How did you first become interested in riding?
I've been riding on-and-off for most of my life, but got my first road bike probably 15 years ago. I have owned mostly BMW's as I got spoiled on my first bike I bought which was an F800GS adventure bike. After that, I had to go bigger with the R1200GSAdventure, which was an awesome bike. I bought a 2014 Moto Guzzi California and rode it all over the coast of Cali from San Diego to the Redwoods, then went back to my BMW again. I've had six bikes total in the past 15 years and now love the R nineT that I have now for local riding and my commute.
What moto trips have you taken (long or short). Where did you go, stay and explore? Tell us some highlights.
My wife and I used to ride from LA to Portland every summer (4 years in a row) and had some awesome times on those trips. We would always stay in San Francisco on the way up and stop to see the Elephant Seals in San Simeon on the way as well. The coast of Oregon is like Ireland in the summer (windy, 60-degrees and foggy most of the time), which is a challenge for any rider, but also a blast.
Tell us some more about you - where do you live? What kind of work do you do?
I live outside of LA in Claremont which is about 20 minutes from a 10,000 foot mountain (Mt. Baldy) so I love that we have 75-degree days in the winter and can take a very short ride and be around snow. My wife and I both work in the pet industry, so we are around fluffy friends all day everyday; so it's nice to get away from time to time and just enjoy nature.
What are your hobbies - what do you enjoy doing when you're not riding?
My hobbies include road cycling too. I love riding around the foothills and getting the wind in my face in one way or another.
Tell us about your experiences with Twisted Road - as either an owner, as a rider, or both. What do you enjoy most about being part of our community?
I don't get to ride as much as I used to, so I love the fact that I can let others enjoy my bike. It is awesome to see how excited riders are when they come to pick up my bike. I also think it is awesome to rent a bike that you're interested in before you fork out the money to buy it. There are several bikes I wouldn't have purchased if I would have been able to really try them out first.
What are your favorite rides near your hometown?
PCH (Pacific Coast Highway) is incredible anywhere that you jump on it. Also, love GMR (Glendora Mountain Road) which is about 20 minutes from Ontario Airport and you can be riding up in the mountains on the winding roads and be back for dinner. Also, I love riding in Malibu and going out to Neptune's Net (fish and beer and other motorcyclists). If you have never done that ride and you are in SoCal, it is a must! Awesome views, awesome bikes, and awesome seafood!
What location is on your moto trip bucket list?
France. I would love to ride and follow the Tour de France some day. I want to fly to Europe and rent a bike and just go everywhere.
