Eric W. planned a surprise weekend getaway with his wife on a motorcycle built for two. He rented a 201 Ural cT from Dumitru U. in Fort Lauderdale, FL. He is sharing the fun, relaxation, and good places to stop, eat, and stretch along the way with the Twisted Road community.
I work a lot and my wife had been on my case. She wanted to do something fun and exciting—just the two of us. A quick overnight trip, just to get away, reconnect, and relax. She left the plans 100% in my hands. Her only restriction: no skydiving.
Because in my world, “fun & exciting” can be a bit extreme. I wanted to do something out of the ordinary.
I jumped on Twisted Road and saw a 2016 Ural cT with a sidecar. This was the perfect bike for our getaway!
It had been many years since she was on the back of a bike. Actually, about 20 years ago—before kids. The last time she was on a bike, the trip was too long and it rained a little. The fun factor for her was down several notches. A sidecar is totally different and way more comfortable…I had to give it a shot.
I kept the plans a surprise for two months, including the motorcycle. When the garage door opened and she saw the bike, all she could do was laugh. Thankfully, she was cool about it!
My plan was to drive the motorcycle from our home in Boca Raton to Melbourne Beach, stay overnight, and return the next day. Melbourne Beach is about two hours north from our house.
I purchased her a Sedici helmet to match mine. The helmet bluetooth was great; we could easily speak during the trip. My phone was mounted on the handlebars with navigation turned on. She also had her phone map and guided me as we drove.

We started very early in the morning. To break up the trip, we had breakfast at the Lazy Loggerhead Café in Jupiter, FL. This was about a third of the way. The Lazy Loggerhead Café is in a county park, right next to the beach. We relaxed, had a great breakfast, and stretched our legs.
After breakfast, we drove north another third of the way to Summer Crush Vineyard & Winery in Fort Pierce. Who knew there were vineyards in Florida? Because of COVID, our tour was canceled, but they allowed us to do a self-guided tour and my wife did a tasting.
Summer Crush is a cool place. They have a large pavilion for live bands and events. They frequently have car shows as well. We were there on a Tuesday so not much was going on. This was okay because we wanted to relax. We will probably be planning another trip to Summer Crush.
We arrived at the Hilton Melbourne Beach at about 2:00 p.m. We went to the beach for about two hours and chilled out.
Then we decided to get dinner at Squid Lips. This place is on the Indian River and we ate dinner in the back of the restaurant literally on the beach. After dinner, we got ice cream at The Fat Donkey.
The next morning, we rode home. We stopped halfway to get brunch at the Berry Fresh Café in Port St. Lucie.
We had a blast. Everywhere we went, people gave thumbs up and asked about the bike…totally out of the ordinary! Side-note on sidecars: be prepared for a workout.
