Oh. My. Heck. I’ve been a technical rider for years, chasing dual sport adventures and never thought I’d dabble in the likes of cushy road baggers.
That said, I was in Omaha and the weather was just right, so I decided to try my hand at renting from another owner. A quick search in the Omaha area provided the bullpen and I knew the second I laid eyes on this 2016 Indian Chief Vintage, I had found my closer.
After making the reservation, I connected with Andy the owner and set up a time to meet and return the bike.
"Andy was incredibly accommodating with any gear we needed (hadn’t planned on riding, so didn’t bring helmets/gloves) and Jenny the Chief was in showroom condition."
Andy was genuinely excited to share his experience on such an incredible machine with us, showcasing what this is much more than a transaction, but a community of people who love bikes. Then, after providing a quick rundown on the controls and switches, Andy waved us off on our adventure of the day through the American heartland.
Thanks to Andy’s local ride recommendations, I was stoked on the winding routes that we took. The topography wasn’t at all what I expected, as we rode through the Loess Hills of Iowa, just across the State line.
The bike itself was a dream. The strong pull of the 1800cc engine, as I pulled out onto the first main road inspired confidence in the day. The suspension and riding position had me wondering where my bowl of popcorn was. At every stop, we’d turn heads and field questions. In the end, I was always a little sad to admit the bike wasn’t mine, but informed all the onlookers where they could find her.
Returning the bike was easier said than done, but only because I wasn’t quite ready to let go. Andy had let us park a car at his house, so the exchange was simple and we were on our way home after a top 10 day of riding! Y’all may have turned this dual-sport dirt dog into a re-born easy rider.
Thanks, Andy!
(Jenny, I’ll be back for you)
