A Brief History of the Distinguished Gentleman's Ride

Founded in 2012 by Mark Hawwa in Sydney, Australia, the DGR was inspired by a photograph of Don Draper from the TV show "Mad Men" astride a classic motorcycle in his finest suit.

This image sparked the idea of a themed ride that would bring together motorcycle enthusiasts to break stereotypes associated with bikers and to support a charitable cause.

The inaugural ride saw 3,000 riders across 64 cities.

Over the years, the event has witnessed exponential growth:

  • 2013: 11,000 riders in 145 cities in Australia, raising $277,000 AUD.

  • 2014: 20,000 riders in 257 cities across 58 countries, raising $1.5 million.

  • 2015: 37,000 riders in 410 cities across 79 countries, raising $2.3 million.

  • 2016: 57,000 riders in 505 cities across 90 countries, raising $3.6 million.

  • 2017: 94,000 riders in 581 cities across 92 countries, raising $4.85 million.

  • 2018: 114,000 riders in 648 cities across 102 countries, raising $6.1 million.

  • 2019: 116,000 riders in 678 cities across 104 countries, raising $6 million.

  • 2020: Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, 56,000 riders in 2,531 cities across 171 countries participated in the "Ride Solo" campaign, raising $2.7 million.

  • 2021: 65,000 riders in 913 cities across 116 countries, raising $4.1 million.

  • 2022: 94,000 riders in 804 cities across 101 countries, raising $6.04 million.

  • 2023: 106,000 riders in 893 cities across 107 countries, raising $7.45 million.

  • 2024: Record-breaking year with 113,000 riders in 959 cities across 109 countries, raising $7.6 million.

You can clearly see the progression.

To date, the DGR has raised over $50 million USD for men's health initiatives, uniting more than 500,000 riders from 121 countries.

And this year’s event is expected to be larger than ever.

The 2025 Distiguinshed Gentleman's Ride: What to Expect

The upcoming DGR is scheduled for Sunday, May 18, 2025.

While the exact itineraries vary by city, the essence remains consistent: riders dressed in their finest attire—think tweed suits, silk ties, and polished shoes—cruising through urban landscapes typically on classic and vintage-styled motorcycles.

But you’ll see all types of motorcycles within these events, from BMW GS adventure bikes to Harley Street Glides

Regardless of what you ride, the event emphasizes camaraderie, style, and, most importantly, raising funds for men's health.

Main Sponsors and Partners

The DGR's success is bolstered by its partnerships with key organizations:

  • Movember: As the official charity partner since 2016, Movember collaborates with DGR to fund prostate cancer research and men's mental health programs.

  • Triumph Motorcycles: A global partner since 2014, Triumph supports DGR by providing resources, promotional efforts, and exclusive motorcycles as rewards for top fundraisers.

These collaborations have been instrumental in amplifying the event's reach and impact.

Tips for a Successful Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride

If this is your first DGR or you’re a seasoned participant, preparation can make or break the experience.

Here’s how to get the most out of it:

1. Choose the Right Bike

Style matters. The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride celebrates vintage aesthetics—café racers, bobbers, classics, and retro-modern customs. You don’t have to own one, but you have some serious fun riding something that matches the event’s vibe. This is where Twisted Road ecomes your best friend. Rent that Triumph Bonneville, Royal Enfield Classic, or Moto Guzzi V7 you've always wanted. For many, it's not just about showing up—it’s about showing up with style.

2. Dress the Part

Think 1960s British gentleman. Tweed jackets, waistcoats, pocket watches, brogues, silk ties. It’s formal, it’s sharp, and it’s fun. The event is as much about appearance as it is about purpose. Many cities even host “Best Dressed” competitions.

3. Fundraise Early

Participation is free, but fundraising is the core mission. Set up your profile early at gentlemansride.com and share your story. Riders who fundraise often earn exclusive rewards from sponsors like Triumph Motorcycles.

4. Know the Local Route and Schedule

Each city has its own route, gathering points, and post-ride events. You’ll get access to the local itinerary once registered, but check with the local ride host to confirm. Most rides last between 1-3 hours, often followed by a social gathering at a local café, pub, or moto hangout. Arrive early, ride respectfully, and engage with the community.

5. Capture and Share the Experience

You’ll want to document the day—photographers are usually on-site, but bring a GoPro or phone mount if you can. Share your photos and tag the event and sponsors. Hashtags like #GentlemansRide, #TwistedRoad, and #RideDapper help the community grow and connect.

It's all about the ride and the style

Why the Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride Matters

The DGR isn't just a themed ride. It's a statement.

Each year, men die too young from preventable health issues—often because they delay seeking help. By riding and raising funds, DGR participants are changing the conversation around men’s health. This is not about being loud. It's about being heard.

Movember, the ride’s official charity partner since 2016, funds groundbreaking research and global health initiatives. From suicide prevention to breakthrough therapies for prostate cancer, the money raised is saving lives.

Again, the numbers speak volumes:

  • 500,000+ registered riders to date
  • 121 countries
  • Over 1,100 cities hosted rides
  • $50 million+ USD raised since 2012
  • More than 250,000 donors contributed in 2024 alone

This kind of reach only happens when people commit—riders, donors, brands, and communities.
